| About Me | I retired from the Army as a Colonel after more than 36 years of military service, with all but a few weeks on active duty. Upon retirement from the military, I worked as an executive with a civilian firm before moving to Apex, NC to settle down. I enlisted in January 1974, graduated from Warrant Officer Flight School as a helicopter pilot in 1977 and received my commission as a Lieutenant from Officer Candidate School in 1983. My last assignment was as an aviation Brigade Commander at Ft Eustis, Virginia while simultaneously serving in the position of Assistant Commandant of the United States Aviation Logistics School, a one-star Brigadier General Position (served in this position as a senior Colonel). I flew both helicopters and airplanes throughout my military career. As an enlisted Soldier, I served as a Field Artillery Cannoneer at Fort Lewis, WA. As a Warrant Officer helicopter pilot, I was initially assigned to Alaska followed by an assignment as a Standardization Instructor Pilot at the Army Aviation Center, Fort Rucker, Alabama. As a Captain during the Gulf War, I commanded an aerial reconnaissance company and subsequently served as a field grade company commander and in other leadership and staff positions as a Major. As a Lieutenant Colonel and battalion commander, I deployed the battalion from Germany to Iraq in early 2003 as one of the first aviation units into the war. We were attached to the 11th Attack Helicopter Regiment out of Illesheim, Germany. After leaving Germany, I served a tour of duty as a Colonel and Chief of Army Aviation Systems at the Pentagon in Washington DC, followed by brigade command at Fort Eustis, VA. I am married to the former Gayle Johnson of Garland, North Carolina. She is a teacher and was a supportive military spouse. Gayle and I recently moved to Apex, NC. We intend to spend the summers...(read more) |
