About Me | 1991: Graduated MFLD High School 1993: Graduated MSTC with an Associates Degree in Accounting 1993: Married to Don (DJ) Thompson 1993: Moved to Kansas (we lived in Liberal, Meade, and Independence) DJ got his first jobs out of college (UWRF) here. As the main bread winner, I followedïŠ I started out as an Arby’s manager, then took a job as an Administrative Assistant to a Farmers Insurance Agent. When we moved to Independence, I helped out on the large hog operation that DJ worked for. 1995: Moved to Wells, Minnesota (near Albert Lea and I-90) In an effort to be only 4 hours away from family instead of 15 as we wanted to start a familyïŠ DJ continued working for large corporate hog facilities, and my first job here was an assistant to a State Farm Agent. 1996: Our first son, Dominic, is born. 1999: Our second son, Devin, is born. After Devin was born, I secured a job at Wells Insurance Agency within Wells Federal Bank. Here I was able to get my insurance license in Property & Casualty and Life & Health. I was an agent and an administrative assistant. This was an accomplishment that made me very proud! 2001: moved to Stevens Point Wisconsin and purchased the Red Mill Supper Club!!!! After 10 years of getting beat up by animals on the hog farms, DJ came to me and asked to discuss what other avenues we may want to pursue as his body was just getting abused so much and he didn’t want it to affect his time with me or the boys. We both agreed that operating a restaurant has always been a dream. (Arby’s paid my way thru college, and he managed a night club on UWRF campus. Plus, many of my family members owned or operated bars/restaurants.) We signed the papers exactly one week before 9-11-01 happened and changed the economy forever! 2011: Fast forward 10 years! We are still here after the economy tanking and road construction, etc, etc, etc.:) What an accomplishment! I took a part time job as an administrative assistant at Big Brothers Big Sisters once Devin entered Kindergarten. I wasn’t able to be a stay-at-home mommy with Dom, so it was a treat to do it for Devin. I made some wonderful friends and contacts thru BBBS and it was bittersweet to take a new position as Accountant for the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin in 2008. I absolutely LOVE working here!! Our organization manages $9.5 million in assets for over 200 different funds. All of these funds were created by generous folks in the community who wished to “give back†someday. We invest the funds and use the proceeds to award grants and scholarships back to the community. And I thought BBBS was rewarding-this takes the cake! While I am out working 20 hours per week, this leaves DJ to do all the “behind the scenes†stuff for the restaurant. He’s busy meeting with distributors, taking care of maintenance, the gardens, etc. Both of are also currently serving on different Boards of Directors. I’ve served the last 6 years on the Board for the Stevens Point Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (am I currently immediate past Chairperson). Don serves as President of the Wisconsin River Valley Chapter of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association, and is a Board member of the State Association of the WRA. Our boys continue to grow and get smarter than usïŒ Dom is passionate about sports and Devin is passionate about the arts. Dom has been playing football since 4th grade. He is now taller than both his mom and dad, but continues to show his love for us-even in public!! He will be a sophomore at SPASH this fall, get his driver’s license in January 2012, and graduate in 2014. His current goal is to go to a culinary institution. He has entered 2 dessert contests in the last year and taken first place in both. Devin has sung in our church youth choir since Kindergarten and has performed in several plays as a supporting actor and leading roles. He will enter Ben Franklin Jr High school in the fall and will graduate in 2017. Having two boys has been an amazing adventure that keeps getting better even during the teenage years. Of course, lots of other things have happened in the course of the past 20 years (meeting lots of people, vacations, deaths, births, bumpy patches), but it’s all made me a better person in the end. Without struggle we would just stay the same and not learn a thing so I am grateful f...(read more) |
