After showing exceptional prowess in various sports during his high school years at Auburndale, Wisconsin, including football, baseball, and basketball, Tauscher embarked on his college football career at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Despite being a walk-on in 1995, he eventually rose to the ranks of a regular starter at the right tackle position. His blocks significantly contributed to Ron Dayne's Heisman Trophy-winning season in 1999.

His professional career kicked off in 2000 when he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the 7th round of the NFL Draft that year. Despite an early career setback due to a sprained medial collateral ligament and a torn anterior cruciate ligament, Tauscher made a triumphant return in 2003, starting every game for the Packers.
