What is Kelda Roys known for?

Kelda Helen Roys, born June 24, 1979 in Marshfield, Wisconsin, is a distinguished alumni of Marshfield High School. Roys has made significant contributions as a tech entrepreneur, business owner, attorney, and Democratic politician. She has been serving as a member of the Wisconsin State Senate from the 26th district since January 4, 2021, succeeding Fred Risser.

Prior to her role in the State Senate, Roys served two terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly from the 81st district. Besides her political career, Roys was also a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and for Governor of Wisconsin in 2018.

Roys' academic journey took her from New York University, where she designed her own major in politics, drama, and cultural studies, to the University of Wisconsin Law School. She graduated magna cum laude from both institutions, earning a B.A in 2000 and a J.D in 2004, respectively. During her legal education, she focused on civil rights and international law, and participated in the Wisconsin Innocence Project.

In addition to her political and legal pursuits, Roys has also been heavily involved in community service. She served on the boards of multiple organizations, including the Clean Lakes Alliance, TEMPO Madison, Citizen Action of Wisconsin, ACLU of Wisconsin, among others. While attending law school, she worked at the Wisconsin Innocence Project and at several international law firms. Post law school, she served for four years as the executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin.

As a business owner, Roys founded her real estate startup, OpenHomes, and currently serves as its CEO. Furthermore, Roys was instrumental in advocating for the passage of key legislature such as the Compassionate Care for Rape Victims Act during her time as the executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin.
