Karl R. Kowalske

KALAMAZOO â€“ Diekema Hamann would like to announce the promotion of Karl Kowalske, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, EDAC to a principal of the firm.
Karl holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and a Masters of Architecture with Distinction from the University of Michigan. Since his employment in 2005, Karl has become a LEED Accredited Professional and successfully completed his Architect Registration Examination, becoming a full member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and National Council of Architectural Registration Boards certificate holder.
In 2009, Karl earned Accreditation in Evidence-Based Design from The Center for Health Design by successfully completing an exam covering topics such as evidence-based design for healthcare, research, predesign, design, and construction and occupancy. EDAC (evidence-based design accreditation and certification) accredited individuals must demonstrate a clear understanding of these concepts and the ability to use an evidence-based design process to meet and/or exceed the recommended minimum requirements.
That same year, the CSM Group awarded Kowalske with the Architect Fellowship, created by CSM to recognize the importance of architects in the construction industry. Karl used the fellowship to further his education in healthcare design and attended the 2010 ASHE Planning, Design, and Construction Conference in San Diego, CA.
Karl is an Adjunct Professor of Interior Design at Western Michigan University, mentors students in the architectural program with Kalamazoo Public Schools, sits as a State Judge for the Michigan Industrial and Technology Education Society, and serves on the Southwest Michigan AIA Chapter board.
During his employment as Project Manager with Diekema Hamann, Karl has been a leader on DHAEâ€™s healthcare design team managing such projects as Allegiance Healthâ€™s new 60,000 sq. ft. Specialty Center in Jackson, MI and Bronson Methodist Hospitalâ€™s new Cardiac Catheterization Lab Suite in Kalamazoo, MI Additionally, his list of clients includes Ingham Regional Medical Center, Lakeland HealthCare, Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center, and Kalamazoo Area Christian Retirement Association.
