Hap died on November 25, 2008, at St. Vincents' Hospital in Indianapolis, from complication of diabetes. He leaves behind his wife, Beth, son Phil, daughter Kate, and his sister Joy. Hap loved life, and returned to Marietta often, to visit friends.
