Operations Officer aboard USS Endurance and USS Impervious, responsible for all radar, sonar, radio and cryptographic equipment and material, plus the successful service of 20-25 enlisted. Impervious had two tours in Vietnam. During the first, during daylight we’d sneak up on junks, and then board and inspect for contraband as one of few Lien Doc Nguoi Nhia−“soldiers who fight under the sea,” as operations were known. At night we’d turn off the running lights and run parallel only 200 yards off the beach to interdict equipment and supplies moving south. My uniform consisted of paratroop boots, fatigue shorts and blouse, flak jacket, and a K-bar survival knife retained to this day. On the second tour the ship spent eight months in North Vietnam sweeping live minefields in exchange for Hanoi releasing American POWs.

I had my final tour at the Great Lakes Naval Training Command, first as 11th Battalion Commander to 750 recruits, and then as Assistant Legal Officer.

Served as Operations Officer aboard two ships, Endurance and Impervious. Joined Impervious while in Vietnam, and inspected junks for contraband during the day. At night, aboard a darkened ship, we would steam mere yards off the beach to interdict the flow of supplies heading south. Later I spent 8 months in North Vietnam aiding with the release--and eventual homecoming--of 591 American POWs.
