Franklin Delano Edwards was born on February 2, 1959 in New York City, New York, U.S. He accelerated into the basketball scene while attending Julia Richman High School, now known as Manhattan International High School. His talent would take him to play college basketball at Cleveland State between 1977 and 1981.

In the 1981 NBA draft, Edwards was selected in the first round, specifically as the 22nd overall pick, by the Philadelphia 76ers. Standing at 6'1" and weighing 170 lb, he played point guard, wearing the numbers 14, 22, and 10 during his career. Edwards' career in the NBA spanned seven seasons from 1981 to 1988. He played for the Philadelphia 76ers from 1981 to 1984, the Lancaster Lightning in 1984-1985, Los Angeles Clippers from 1985 to 1986, and the Sacramento Kings from 1986 to 1988.

During his NBA career, Edwards played in a total of 296 games and scored a total of 1,802 points. His most successful season was the 1985–86 NBA season as a member of the Clippers, in which he appeared in 73 games and averaged 9.0 points per game.
