Date of Passing May 08, 2022
About Hewitt - Broek, Raymond J., age 71, of Hewitt, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 8, 2022 with his family by his side, after a courageous 7 year battle with cancer. Born February 26th, 1951 in Paterson, Ray was raised in both Paterson and Haledon – where he grew up with his younger brother Don. When he wasn't delivering papers on his bicycle, he spent as much time as he could playing baseball on the ball fields in Haledon, and fishing in the local streams. He graduated with honors from Manchester High School at the age of 16, and then attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick where he was an active brother in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and graduated with a master's degree in Accounting. After graduation Ray worked as a C.P.A and Partner for Ernst & Young in Saddle Brook – and later worked for Withum, Smith and Brown in Morristown. After meeting in high school, he married his beloved wife Betty in 1973, and they purchased their first home in Oakland, NJ where they resided for most of their lives raising their 3 children. In 2017, he moved to Hewitt, NJ – and accomplished his dream of living in a lake house overlooking their dock on Greenwood Lake. He served his country proudly in the U.S. National Guard; was an active member of New Life Ministries Church in Hawthorne where he served as Treasurer; and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Holland Home in North Haledon. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed fishing and boating on the lake, and passionately cheering on his grandchildren at their soccer, baseball and football games. Raymond was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (nee Both) Broek. Loving father of Jodi Broek of North Haledon, Mark Broek and his wife Vanessa Saracena of Chester, and Paul Broek of Lincoln Park. Loving grandfather to Sienna, Adrian, Cole, Laguerre, and Aiyla. Brother of Don Broek and his wife Linda of Oakland. He is also survived by his dear nieces and nephews, and numerous other close and dear family members. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 11:00am at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne. Cremation will take place privately. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Friday from 2:00 – 4:00pm and from 7:00 – 9:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or to Hope For Ukraine Inc. (www.browningforshay.com)
