About | Jerry H. Dowling, 74, came to the end of his earthly journey and into the presence of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, early Christmas morning, December 25th, with his loving family by his side. He fought a courageous battle for over nine months with Stage IV Melanoma. He was a man of great Christian Faith who had no fear of earthly death. He was a very devoted and loving husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend. He always put his family before himself. He was a lifelong resident of Daytona Beach and graduated in 1954 from Mainland High School. He remained a loyal Mainland sports fan even though his local grandchildren graduated from Seabreeze, and he attended both Mainland and Seabreeze games up until the spring of 2010. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, college sports, especially the Florida Gators, the beach, taking the family to Disney World, reading and listening to music. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a dedicated mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 43 years. Jerry was also a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, South Daytona, FL. He was predeceased by his parents, Claude and Cuba Dowling. Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Sylvia Simmons Dowling of Daytona Beach, FL; three daughters, Sandi Dowling Widmaier (husband Woody) of Jacksonville, FL; April Dowling Nolan (husband Glen) of Ormond Beach, FL; and Reagan Dowling Hicken (husband Dan) of Jacksonville, FL; one sister, Linda Dowling Hubbard of Port Orange, FL; grandchildren, Matt Widmaier (wife Jenny) of Atlanta, GA, Justin Widmaier of Jacksonville, FL, Shelby DeLosh of Ormond Beach, FL, Brooks Dowling Hicken of Jacksonville, FL, Danielle Hicken and Drew Hicken, both of Jacksonville, FL; and one great-grand-daughter, Charlotte Ann Widmaier of Atlanta, GA. Services will be held at Lohman Funeral Home, 733 W. Granada Boulevard, Ormond Beach. Visitation with the family will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 1, 2011. Celebration of Jerry's life will also be at Lohman's Ormond Beach, on Sunday, January 2, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. Pastor David Schillinger of Holy Cross Lutheran Church will conduct the service.
