Air Force, 10 Years

After enlisting in January 1966, I completed basic training at a military base close to San Antonio, TX. I was sent to Keesler AFB, Mississippi for training in the Security Service (Same work being performed on the USS Pueblo in the late 60's, when it was captured by the North Koreans). I was assigned to a remote military base located on Okinawa for most of my first four years (U.S. Territory at the time), where I served until December 1969. The attached photo was taken at my wedding on Okinawa (February 1969). While stationed in the Far East for more than 3 years, I saw Tokyo, Osaka, Yara, and Kyoto, Japan, Hong Kong, Guam, and Taiwan. I extended my enlistment to become and Air Traffic Controller, and went back to Keesler AFB, Mississippi. My first assignment as an USAF Air Traffic Controller was at Dover AFB, Delaware. While stationed at Dover I decided to re-enlist for four more years, and was assigned to Castle AFB, California. I spent almost 3 years at Castle, and then was offered a job working Area 51 for four years, which I turned down. Six months later, I was assigned to Thule AB, Greenland (winds reaching over 150mph at times and temperatures that would reach 70 degrees below zero.). After my one year assignment at Thule for turning down Las Vegas, Nevada, I was sent to Tinker AFB (Oklahoma City) Oklahoma. With 9 years, 11 months, and 29 days, I decided to leave the US Air Force as an E-6, and applied as an Air Traffic Controller with the FAA. I needed surgery before leaving the military on my right leg, and ended up with a service connected disability.

After MHS 65 I was lucky to get an appointment to U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD and did four years as a US Navy Midshipman. As you know my parents and I were not well of and there was no way my folks could pay for college, so Uncle Sam really helped me! Upon Graduation from Annapolis, I received a commission as a Second Lieutenant (2/Lt) United States Marine Corps. I served in the Marines for about three years. I am an honorably discharged Disabled Vietnam Era Veteran and proud to have served in the Marine Corps. During my service I was injured and spent the my last year of about three years at Bethesda, Naval Hospital and back to Quantico, VA. I had a brief tour in the South China Sea and a small experience of the Vietnam War. My general military background is one of an engineer. I was very lucky and I am proud to have served Our Country. I thank all you of you who have served in the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Law Enforcement and public service including teachers and nurses. May Our Lord Bless all of you.
