Honored Military Alumni
Bob Laiche Class of 1965
Navy, 6 Years Served in the Army NG until I enlisted in the US NAVY in 1965. First duty station was NAS Whidbey Island, Washington state. My second port of duty was on Midway Island where I was promoted to the rank of E-5. Mys last duty station was the USS Enterprise, where I served two tours in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War. There I received the rank of E-5. While going through carrier qualifications, flight operations, air strike procedures, the Enterprise encountered a series of explosions off the coast of Hawaii. Our casualties resulted in having 27 killed and 107 injured. We sustained extreme amounts of on board fires. These fires had to be maintained and kept under control before we could enter Honolulu, Hawaii. We fought numerous re-flashes of those fires for days to come. Once the damages were assessed, the ship was released and sailed to Bremerton, Washington where we went in to dry dock for repairs. Then the routine of sailing back to Vietnam and re-joining the 7th fleet became obvious.
