Long Beach Polytechnic is 100 years young!

Before 2011 ends, we must congratulate "Poly" on becoming a centenarian this year. Long Beach Polytechnic started in the fall of 1911 with a brand-new name and campus on the present site. Prior to 1911, the school known as "Long Beach High School" , had its beginning in 1895 as a one-room school with about twenty students. Although no formal celebrations were planned, we can give thanks on our own to the school who has touched so many lives over the past one hundred years. LBP (1911-2011) and going strong!

Senior Poly Graduates

If there were a Poly book of records Irma McKee would probably be in it as the female graduate that lived the longest. Irma attended Poly as Irma Irene Lynes and graduated with the class of 1922 at age 16. Born in Iowa in 1905 she came to California with her family in 1912 at age 7. She lived most of her life in Belmont Heights raising a family, listening to Dodger games and taking annual fishing trips to West Yellowstone. Irma passed away on June 17,2009 at the age of 103. This information comes mostly from her obituary in the Press-Telegram but I did locate her my copy of the 1922 yearbook. Irma may well be the oldest Poly graduate ever until someone else outlives.her. Hazel "Mona" Baldridge may do just that - she celebrated her 100th birthday on August 2, 2009 (family name Trammell). She came to California in 1913 at age 4. from Alabama and graduated from Poly. according to the birthday announcement in the PT. She was an Air Force flight nurse from 1953 to 1967. We add our congratulations to those she received from Governor Schwarzenegger and President Obama !

Old Poly Yearbooks

I started collecting Poly yearbooks about 5 years ago and now have a complete collection extending from 1909 to 2009 (just picked up 2 days ago). I am still looking for earlier yearbooks and memorabilia prior to 1909. The best source was eBay ! I bought an extremely rare 1906 yearbook online -it may be the only surviving copy.Another source are local bookstores, particularly Planet Books on Anaheim. Also some extra copies may be available from the Yearbook Office at Poly - contact Brett Alexander. The current "sale" offers the 2008,2007 and 2006 yearbooks for a total of $90. Brett may have extras from other years that he can offer for sale (all money goes to Poly HS). My main interests are Poly history, especially sports. I have a 1959 in my collection but no "spare".

"Poly's" First Graduate -Pt 2

He was born on August 21, 1877. His father was born in Iowa in 1849, his mother in England in 1851. Charles Ernest Shaul was the first (and only) graduate of Long Beach High School in 1897, a year before the "new" school was opened in May 1898 at 8th and American (now LB Blvd). He married and moved to LA to become a salesman for Byron Jackson Iron Works in LA. Charles described himself in a 1918 Draft Registration as having medium height, stocky build with blue eyes and brown hair.- no photograph was included. His life was very short as he passed away on February 7, 1928 at age 50. His widow outlived him by 30 years. The cause of death is unknown. Charles should always be remembered as being the very first Jackrabbit !!!

"Poly's" First Graduate

Although Long Beach High School opened in 1895, no one graduated until 1897. This was a class of ONE !
makes that person the undisputed first graduate. The graduate states in a letter to the school in 1911(when Poly was born) what it was like : " The first day I eneterd the school I found about 20 pupils and one teacher quartered in the little room.then called the Chapel, on the south side of the old Tabernacle building." It sounds like LBH started in a church! Who knew ?! No one pursued my trivia challenge psted last September so I am "leaking" out a bit of information to motivate more research. More to come !

Trivia challenge

Who was the first Long Beach High (LB Polytechnic since 1911) graduate ? It does not seem possible that there was only ONE graduate in a certain year - obviously in the early years of the school. Please provide two initials and a last name. The year is not important. If you have more information on that person I would like to hear about him/her. E-mail me at FFRMER@aol.com. Go research !!!!

Looking for ancient yearbooks

I am looking for very old yearbooks in the era 1903 (first Caerulea) to 1912. Initially Caerulea was published triannully during the school year - December,April and the June Graduation issue.I believe the first annual issue was 1913, first hardcover 1914. I have April 1906 and June 1906 (22 Grads !). This collection is an off-site resource and depositiory to preserve Poly history. I am a retired faculty member, Thanks
