What is Eminem known for?

Born as Marshall Bruce Mathers III on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri, U.S., the world knows him better by his stage name, Eminem. Also known as 'Slim Shady' and several other names, he became a notable figure as a rapper, songwriter, record producer, record executive, and actor. He began his journey in the music industry in 1988 and has had an illustrious career since then.

Eminem is credited with bringing hip-hop culture into the mainstream, especially in Middle America. Over the years, his works have garnered him global success and widespread recognition as one of the greatest rappers of all time. His music is widely regarded as having broken racial barriers for the acceptance of white rappers in popular music. Despite the controversies surrounding some of his transgressive work during the late 1990s and early 2000s, he became a symbol of American underclass angst. His influence extends beyond the rap genre, inspiring many artists across various fields.

After the release of his debut album Infinite in 1996, and the extended play Slim Shady EP in 1997, he signed with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment. He gained mainstream popularity in 1999 with 'The Slim Shady LP'. His subsequent releases 'The Marshall Mathers LP' in 2000 and 'The Eminem Show' in 2002 were global hits, each earning nominations for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

After taking a break from music in 2005, largely due to his struggle with prescription drug addiction, Eminem made a comeback in 2009 with 'Relapse', followed by 'Recovery' in 2010. The latter was the bestselling album worldwide in 2010, making Eminem one of the few artists to have the best-selling album of the year worldwide twice.

Over the years, he gave us chart-topping albums like 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2' (2013), 'Revival' (2017), 'Kamikaze' (2018), and 'Music to Be Murdered By' (2020). Some of his most popular songs include "My Name Is", "The Real Slim Shady", "The Way I Am", "Stan", "Without Me", "Lose Yourself", among others.

Beyond his solo career, Eminem was also a member of the hip-hop group D12, contributing significantly to their success. From his origins in Detroit, Michigan, to his world-conquering success, Eminem's journey is a testament to his talent and resilience.
