| About Me | It is spring again and truth be told my favorite game is baseball. I remember as a tiny tot going to the church socials and watching the guys play slow pitch until way into the deep of evening. I learned by watching; strike, ball, run and out. It was exciting for me to watch. My grandfather was pitcher and everyone wanted him on their team. He was good. I remember summer mornings being awakened by a tennis ball hitting the wall outside our second story bedroom. Grandpa was practicing and it really paid off. The last time I saw him pitch was when he was 79. He had to have a pinch runner but he could still hit and pitch with the best of them. There was a love affair blooming in my heart and anyone who loves the game like I do knows what I am talking about. My brother Matt decided he wanted to play baseball. Matt was good at the game. He started in little league and kept up even after high school. I got drafted to go to the games with my mom, games that would put you to sleep, but I kept on because I knew there was something intrinsically magical about this game. Matt was in the minor leagues for a few seasons but he was injured one day as he went for a pop fly. I was sorry to see him retire from the game. The World Series came to the bay area in 1972. The Oakland A’s and the New York Mets at the Coliseum and my Dad managed to get tickets. My heart was pumping from climbing all those stairs but it stopped as I reached the deck and could see the players warming up. It felt like I was in a dream world. There was a deep almost electric green of the field, the green and gold uniforms, the movement, the applause. It was so clear. I saw all the famous players from both teams but the one that impressed me most was Willie Mays. He was calm and assured, signed a few autographs for the fans then played as he always did, with distinction. Many years have come and gone since those games. These days I catch a game or two on the TV. The World Series, when it is a home team, I’ll watch. I have gone grey and I have children and grandchildren of my own but they don’t share the love of the game like I do. Though I never played the game of baseball myself it is a part of my life and deep in my soul. I have loved baseball and I will alwa...(read more) |
