Vernel, no relations to Vonzell, other than classmate, after graduation, she attended MVSU, majoring in art, but after two years, she took some time off from her studies and worked as an artist's assistant at Cottonlandia Museum in Greenwood, MS where she helped to design the museum's first coloring book that was sold as a souvenir item in the museum's gift shop. In 1978, Vernel returned her studies at MVSU with a major in american history. She graduated in 1984, magna cum

field, nursing. She worked from 1985 to 1991 as a certified nurse's assistant
through MDCC nursing assistants program in Moorhead, MS. In 1991, Vernel was accepted into MDCC practical nursing program and in 1992, passed the Mississippi State Board of Nursing Exam, becoming a licensed practical nurse and have been employed in long-term care (nursing home) nursing from 1985- present.
