Byron Dickensheets
Class of 1967
Army, 3 Years
Was in Vietnam from July 69 - Nov 70. Discharged 4 months early after extending my tour. I was in microwave equipment repair and assigned to the 36 Signal Detachment an 8 man signal team using Tropospheric Scatter. Later attached to the 362 Signal Company Repair Depot. THis gave me the opportunity to visit sites all over country. Got to see a lot of the beautiful Country of Vietnam. The VC welcomed me royally on the night I arrived at 11 o'clock at night with as the pilot said 130 degrees temperature and 98% humidity and it was not raining. Charlie sent us 4 rockets and mortar rounds to welcome us to the country. I was Army but visited the Air Base in Cam Rahn regularly. One day I was standing in line at the canteen when someone Tapped me on the shoulder and said Aren't you Byron Dickensheets from Lebanon Ohio? I said yes and it was Lawrence Strick from our class. Small world isn't it? The VC also gave me a proper send off on my last day there. From in the words of President Nixon. " The safest place in Vietnam. Just like being in the states." Of course they were having riots here at the time. Guess he may have been right after all.
