What is Weldon Gentry known for?

Weldon Christopher "Spot" Gentry, an alumnus of Lawton High School in Lawton, Oklahoma, had quite a distinguished career in American football during his lifetime. Born on September 9, 1906, in Lawton, which was then the Oklahoma Indian Territory, Gentry played as a guard both in college and professional football.

During his college years, Gentry showcased his skills in football by playing for the Arkansas Razorbacks during 1925 and 1926 and later for the Oklahoma Sooners from 1927 to 1929. He achieved recognition and was selected to the 1929 All-Big Six football team.

Gentry's professional career in the National Football League (NFL) began right after his college years. In the NFL, he played for two teams - the Providence Steam Roller during the 1930 and 1931 seasons and the Philadelphia Eagles. In total, during his professional stint, Gentry appeared in 11 NFL games.

Post his playing career, Gentry continued to contribute significantly to American sports. He founded the Oklahoma City Chiefs professional football team and even served as an assistant football coach at Oklahoma. Besides his sports endeavors, Gentry also worked for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and later for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, focusing on bank robbery cases. Sadly, Gentry passed away on March 19, 1990, in Oklahoma City.
