Favorite School Memory Giggling here . . . . thinking back . . . only two things come up that I consider pretty funny and memorable . . . the first - giggle . . . drumroll . . . here goes . . . I had a HUGE crush on Brian Rees - I don't know if anyone knew, except MAYBE his sister Tina - haha - anyway while I had this silly crush on him, I had sent him several "Secret Admirer" Cards. Hahaha. Does anyone remember when our class was doing those secret admirer cards project for Valentine's Day and the excitement of them being distributed during class? Well, it so happened that I was in the same class as Brian when he recieved his first card (yea, there was more after that one, snicker!!) - I got to see him open it and look around the class to see if he could figure it out - was funny - that puzzled look and wishing he knew. I tried not to giggle - was laughing inside and also praying no one would know. I acutally had fun doing the secret admirer thing - hope it made him crazy for a while, hahaha. Ah, such innocence during those days! Chuckling! Loony I was!! Second memorable event was when I was trying out for cheerleading for the first time for junior year . . . when I found out the KU cheerleaders were going to be the judges - I thought "AW MAN! Impossible to make it!" Went ahead and tried - for sure I thought I wouldn't make it. I looked at the list of names that made it - someone tapped me on the shoulder and said I made it - I didn't believe them - had to look at the list myself to verify - sure did make it . . . and the next thing that happened was pretty funny and revealing . . . I ran out of the school so fast as if my pants were on fire! Got in the car with my mom - she had been waiting - had tears running down my cheeks, and said let's go home! Let's go home! - hahaha. My mom (later told me she was thinking "Oh S@$%!") asked me - are you okay? You didn't make it right? I was incoherent and managed to tell her that yes I did. She looked at me uncertainly and asked me again if I did really make it?? I looked at her back and realized - she had the same fears and doubts about whether I could have made it, more so with my deafness. She did not want me to try out for fear of exactly what she thought was happening at that moment! That moment made her more human and made me realize she was trying so hard not to reveal her true thoughts.. (it's not an easy thing to be a parent of child with a disability - so many uncertainities and wanting to protect the child from any hurt . . . ) That moment was an eye opener for me - because that was just the very beginning of what came after - everyone else reacted the same - floored that I, as a deaf kid, would make it. That was a turning point for me for a lot of reasons. Nevertheless - the way I ran out of school and bawled was just pl...(read more)
About Me Oh boy, I sincerely cannot believe it has been 20 years already?!?!? Where did the time go??? It doesn't feel like it's been that long at all! Well, looking back - it's all certainly been an adventure! Chuckling! And I'm looking forward to the next 20 years of adventure!! I really don't know what you all would want to know what I've done since leaving High School - wouldn't want to bore you with my story. Chuckle! Hmm, I think the best way to share what I've done since then is to share the five things that totally suprised me . . . first - the POWER of Love with my husband - Tim, and the kids. Don't want to gross anyone out - but Tim and I are still like newlyweds (been married 15 years, known each other 20 years now - met right after high school at JCCC - he was my first and only boyfriend and is the love of my life) - hahaha. Yea, I know CORNY! I will leave it at that - hahahahaha. Now, the kids - WOW - that's a different kind of LOVE. Whew! I will never be able to explain the intensity of it - it's indescribable and profound! Sometimes the power of it hurts! Chuckling! Can't luv'em enuff! (don't worry, they still have the capacity to drive me up the wall! snicker! snort!) Second - living in good ole Lansing and in the house I grew up in to boot!!!! Never never in a million years would I have dreamt of coming back to this little sleepy town and much less in my mother's house! When my mom remarried and moved - she let my sister live in the house in Lansing - then my sister was moving to Minnesota and at the same time - I got a new job in Olathe and my husband and I were looking for a house to buy (we were living in Wichita and needed to move) - but hadn't decided on anything yet - so mom suggested that we live in the house in Lansing til we decided where we wanted to buy a home. Ten years later - we are STILL in the house in Lansing - hahahaha. It was so easy to just stay put - things became so simple and made us value it more. We ended up having fun remodeling this childhood home of mine! The inside now looks nothing like what I grew up with - thank goodness! I was weirded out at first to be back in Lansing - however, as the years snuck up on me - began to feel right at home and enjoy being humble and closer to the family again - can't imagine moving in the near future now - kids are going to the Lansing Schools - hahaha. Third - laying under the knife for my eyes!!! The scarest and bravest moment of my life! Did the Lasik surgery!! YIKES! Took me TWO years of research and building up my confidence to do it - why so hard???? Well . . . the risk of losing my eyesight was more PROFOUND for me - I was scared to be DEAF and BLIND! Ohhhhh, the fears!!! Sigh! I asked the doctor to let me test the results after the first eye - in case it failed - I can stop the surgery right there and save my other eye. After the 5 minute (yes! just 5 mins!!) surgery on the first eye - they let me look at the clock in the surgery room - WHAT A MIRACLE! I COULD SEE!! hahahahaha. Told them to proceed with the 2nd! It was a miracle how it turned out!! I was able to SEE instantly!!! It was well worth it!! Giggle! Would I do it again? Yea, hahahaha. Fourth - POLITICS . . . I have NEVER cared for politics - had no interest whatsoever until OBAMA came along - WOW! He is what this country needs - but of course that's only my opinion. Giggle! I've never been exctied about politics either and had never contributed to it as well until now. Obama has the ability to transcend what makes each of us different and unites us! This is an exciting time - because this time the grassroots everyday Amercians CAN make a difference - no more of the big wigs making the decisions for us - giggle!! Tho, right now - I'm a little tired of the long drawn out campaign with stubborn Hillary - hahaha. I better stop this before a one of our classmates who is a HIllary supporter gets upset with me. Giggling. Fifth - working at Johnson County Mental Health Center for as long as I have! I've worked in three different capacities there - my favorite was working as a Family Focus Case Manager with kids with Severe Persistent Mental Illness and their parents. That was challenging. when I got pregnant - the sporadic schedule of the job was not ideal for having a family - so changed positions - worked as a Psychosocial Group Coordinator for Adults with Severe Persistent Mental Illness. Then later - a coworker got a new job and the boss begged me to take on her position as the Vocational Specialist. Been the best place to work - eve...(read more)
