Death of Marc Lunde '73

On the evening of August 12, 2016, Marc Lunde, age 61, of Denver passed away peacefully at his home. Born in Montgomery, Ala., Marc grew up in McLean, Va. before heading west on a cross-country road trip that brought him to Colorado. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Northern Colorado. Marc met his wife, Laura McFarlane, while on a run in Washington Park in Denver. They enjoyed thirty wonderful years of marriage while raising two beloved children, Julia and Aidan Lunde. Proudly referring to himself as a family man, Marc was a dedicated husband and father. He enjoyed an active lifestyle of tennis, golfing, mountain biking, skiing, hiking and camping. Marc had a long, fulfilling career in commercial real estate brokerage and was a highly valued partner at Avison Young in Denver. Outgoing, with a positive outlook, Marc never missed an opportunity to smile. Throughout his life he was a devoted friend and inspiring mentor. Marc was preceded in death by his parents, Col. Oswald Lunde and Anne Potts Lunde, of McLean, Va. He is survived by his wife, Laura McFarlane Lunde, his children, Julia and Aidan Lunde. Marc's siblings, Eric (Barbie) Lunde of Bluffton, S.C., Rosalind (Dick) Nearing of McLean, Va., Susan (Charles) Minnick of Arlington, Va. and John (Jennifer) Lunde of McLean, Va. Special thanks to the staff at the University of Colorado Cancer Center-Anschutz for their unparalleled care. A Celebration of Life will be held in Denver on Sept. 10th. His family requests that in lieu of flowers, donation are sent in Marc's name to Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado and the Colorado Mountain Club.

The Montgomery County Police Department are reporting that Mark Waugh, a JMU 2012 alumnus, was allegedly murdered yesterday morning in Silver Spring, Md.
At about 3:25 a.m., police responded to a call from one of the occupants at 1220 East West Highway for assistance. Upon their arrival, police said Waugh,23, Rahul Gupta, 24 and an unidentified woman were inside the apartment.
Waugh was suffering from what appeared to be cut wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Gupta was taken into custody and charged with homicide.
During his time at JMU, Waugh studied history and was a member of the JMU Debate team. In 2012, Waugh was named to the Cross Examination Debate Association All-American Team, putting him among the top 30 debaters worldwide.
“He was an extremely smart kid,” said David Barton, a former Breeze sports editor and 2011 alumnus who graduated from Langley High School with Waugh and Gupta. “He was great at speaking — he was one of the top debaters that JMU probably ever had.”
Waugh had just finished teaching in Korea for a year.
Barton added Waugh and Gupta were friends. Gupta was a graduate of George Washington University and was studying to become a doctor.
“While Mark was good in the liberal arts and was able to speak very well, in the same way, Rahul was very good at science,” Barton said. “He did very complicated math — he was very, very intelligent.”
Barton said Gupta was celebrating his 23rd birthday yesterday when the incident occurred. The incident, Barton added, might have started as a disagreement and may have escalated out of control because of alcohol.
“It’s very shocking when something like this happens when you know each person involved,” he said. “You think that — how can people you think to be rational have something like this take place. You just hope that the situation could have de-escalated.”

Death of Greg Planicka, '83

MONDAY, JULY 13 2009

A 44-year-old McLean man died July 12 in a single-car crash near Aldie, VA (south of Leesburg).

At about 4:20 p.m., Gregory Planicka was driving a 2001 Honda S2000 westbound on Lenah Run Circle, about a tenth of a mile east of Hidden Valley Place, when he lost control of his vehicle, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

A preliminary investigation found that the car left the north side of the road, struck a tree and rolled several times. Planicka, who was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected from the car and died at the scene, Troxell said.

Greg is survived by his parents Dr. & Mrs. James Planicka, sisters Sam & Juliet and brother Mike
