She attended Lackawanna Junior College, graduated from the University of Scranton with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1980. She received a Master of Business Administration in 1987. She was the supervisor for the blood bank at Mercy Hospital, Scranton, and also worked for Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre as a medical technologist. She was a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the Clinical Laboratory Management Association
