About Me	I am not a doctor. I have no PhD. I don't have a title attached to my name, no Dr. or even a Mrs. or Miss. I do not perform surgeries or cure cancer. I have little prestige and a very specific place near the middle on the totem pole. I have limited power and am not the ultimate book of knowledge. But mostly, they don't need knowledge. They don't need terminology or definitions. They need wisdom, they need kindness, they need understanding. I am not the one that they need to look up to. They need to look me directly in the eyes and find reassurance there. They need someone who is always around, someone they trust, someone they are not afraid to grab by the hand. I am the person who hears the whispered admissions of fear, the subdued groans of pain, the hushed cries of loneliness. I am the one who can tell them what they need to hear. They listen to the diagnosis, to what the disease means, to what the outcome could or could not be. But they don't hear it. What they hear is my murmuring words of kindness, my gentle prods of encouragement, my loud and joking tones of distraction. I may change their IV's and administer their medications, but these are not the actions that are heeling them. I heal with my words, with my touch, with my heart. I heal with my soul.
