Favorite School Memory | There were so many - chior and Windjammers with Larry Cunningham, and Mrs. Lee's English class are high on the list - but I'd say that admiring Kris Stoutt from afar tops the list. I just wish I'd said something to her... |
About Me | You know that feather at the beginning of "Forrest Gump"? Well I've floated happily from one adventure in life to another, enjoying just about every minute of it. (Except for the receding hairline thing - what's up with that? I heard a geneticist say that the genes responsible for hair loss had been isolated and that for roughly $15K a person could have a full head of their own hair back. But, she went on to say that with all the other health issues to work on this particular process wouldn't be available anytime soon. Hello? How's the funding for all that other work coming along? Even if they charged twice that much the lines outside their doors would rival Disneyland. Not that I'm bald Kris - I'm just "receding.") Anyway, among my best memories after LO are surfing the beaches of Southern California (but please don't tell my mom - she thought I was attending Pepperdine at Malibu). Then there was singing in the Norman Layden Singers with the Oregon Symphony, and four or five really great senior years in college. I was undeclared for my first three senior years.... but I'm well educated and would do well on Jeopardy. I had a blast traveling through the U.S. and Mexico - Maui's my favorite (with Malibu a close second). And, finally settling down in Eugene after wrapping things up at the U. of O.. Life after LO was a lot like being retired for me for several years. It's never been a grind and I've honestly enjoyed just about every day. (Did I mention the tumor? I had a very brief, loud and unexpected encounter with a Mayflower moving truck on my motorcycle in September of '76, and to make a long story short, while ER docs put me back together (picture the Scare Crow after the Witch's flying monkeys tore him apart) they found a tumor in what they finally determined was my right arm. A few years and four operations later I was almost as good as new. The entire experience gave me a very different way of looking at life and it's still with me after all these years. Taking the "live like you were dying" approach to life was a lot more fun in my twenties than it would be with cancer now but I managed to stay alive during some pretty adrenaline filled years - if only by the skin of my teeth. Three times in particular bystanders could be heard saying "that's it, he's dead." And every time, after I came to, I jumped up and went back for more. More mountains to climb, more waves to surf, more rivers to kayak. I never stuck with anything long enough to get really good - hence all the near death experiences. Until finally I was down to my last two death defying feets: Parachuting and marriage. (Not that I'm afraid of commitment Kris.) So now all I have left to try is jumping out of a perfectly good airplane with a doily tied to my back - which I've saved in the event that I get sick again. In the mean time, with my ...(read more) |
