About Me | In 1987 I was sponsored by a Grand Rapids tool and die firm for apprenticeship training administered by the National Tooling and Machining Association. Upon completion, I began working as a machinist and apprentice die maker. Shortly after beginning full time work I pursued my childhood dream to become a pilot. In 1990, I earned my wings and seriously considered a career in aviation, but decided against it. After my apprenticeship, in tool and die manufacturing I received journeyman credentials and continued to work in the trade, eventually ending up in the engineering department where I toiled away on UNIX mainframes doing computer aided design (CAD), and computer aided machining (CAM), as well as IT work for the shop. It was around this time that I began learning computer programming, something I quickly absorbed and became totally enamored with. In my trade, programming had hard and fast practical applications, and allowed me to open the creativity faucet. Throughout this period I was haunting the halls of GRCC, soaking up mathematics, physics, information technology, and electronics. A goal in this endeavor never really materialized. For more than a decade, I took courses simply for the thrill of learning something new and expanding on the experiences I was living. Eventually I realized that building plastic injection molds for cup holders and dashboard bezels, installed in the latest model offerings from Detroit, was taxing my spirit and sense of worth. In 2004 I left the industry for more fulfilling work in medical manufacturing. Here, I reasoned, my labor could help save lives, instead of helping to prevent your morning coffee from soiling your trousers. At the same time I started a side business, Custom Interface LLC, doing mainly automation programming. In this role I took on small programming jobs around the Midwest in material handling, product test and validation, and scientific instrumentation. I pursued anything that required a PC to interface with hardware, data, and humans. This is something I continue to this day. In the medical manufacturing front, I provide engineering support to the manufacturing processes of various catheters and drug delivery systems that we specialize in. This involves process development for new products, fixture design and machining, and of course, PLC and computer programming. In most all this time I never really cultured a social life. Foremost, I was happy, and had far too many things clinking around in my head that I thought required my attention. Needless to say, I have no family, but I am quite at ease with that. I did however, cross paths with a gal named Sena, during the dawn of the new millennia. Although a simple computer issue brought us together, I found that in her presence I was utterly confused. Undoubtedly it was all the wafting pheromones and what not, for I learned later that she was affected in kind. We are still side by side, trying to sort things out today. I truly believe that we each have the end of the other's ribbo...(read more) |
