Served from 1973-1977 as an Air Traffic Controller. From 1981-1983 as an Air Traffic Controller. 1983-1985 as a Reserve Officer Training Corps student at the University of South Carolina. Commissioned December 1985 and spent the next 16 years as a Naval Flight Officer. Retired in December 2001 as a Lieutenant Commander.

Entered service September 1973 and served 8 years as an enlisted air traffic controller. Selected for Enlisted Commissioning Program and attended University of South Carolina. Awarded BA in International Relations (Cum Laude) and commissioned Ensign on December 21, 1985. Spent next 16 years as a Naval Flight Officer and P-3 Mission Commander. Assigned to Patrol Squadron 22 in Barber's Point, Hawaii 1988-1991. Spent 3 years in Rota, Spain as Tactical Support Center Operations Officer. Participated in Operation Desert Storm and NATO operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina.. Spent three years in Tactical Air Control Squadron 21 and deployed with George Washington Battle Group on USS GUAM (LPH-9). Supported non-combatant evacuation operations of US citizens from the US embassy in Monrovia, Liberia (1996). Spent 2 years in Patrol Squadron 10 and flew combat missions in support of the Kosovo Campaign and coordinated SLAM missile strikes against mobile land targets from the CAOC in Vicenza, Italy. Spent final 2 years on active duty as Fleet Combat Training Center, Atlantic, Combat Systems Training Officer. Retired from service on December 1, 2001 as a Lieutenant Commander. Awards include: Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal w/ 2 gold stars, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal w/ gold star, Southwest Asia Service Medal w/ bronze star, NATO Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and numerous other personal and unit awards. The story of John F. Kennedy's exploits aboard PT-109 was a prime motivator in my joining the Navy. It was the best decision of my life and it provided me with a very rewarding career and a life full of experiences that I will never forget.
