| About Me | After college, a roommate and I traveled around Europe, arriving in Rome for the opportunity of a lifetime watching the star-studded US team compete in the 1960 Summer Olympics, then heading north for the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Bavaria. Following our tour of Europe, I studied German history, literature, etc. at the University of Munich. On return to the States, I attended Stanford Business School, after which I joined the Peace Corps and participated in a public administration project in Liberia, West Africa. During a break, I took a trip around West Africa by “mammy (market women) wagon”, among the highlights of which were visits to the cliff dwellings of the early Dogon culture near Mopti in Mali, Timbuktu, and the Benin culture of southern Nigeria. Following the Peace Corps, I joined the World Bank in order to continue my involvement with developing countries from a different perspective, while I studied economics at George Washington University on the side. Much of my career was spent preparing, appraising, and supervising agricultural projects (agricultural credit, extension, research) and agroindustry projects in countries around the world. After retirement, the lives of myself and my wife Margie (born in Shanghai, raised in Bangkok, met at the World Bank) underwent a sea change. My parents had moved to San Diego to escape the ice and snow. While they were still active, they enjoyed traveling, and during this period, Margie and I took them on a trip to Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, and Thailand. However, my father encountered medical problems, and the older of my two sisters, Judy, who also had relocated to San Diego, met medical difficulties, as well. In addition, Debbie, the younger of my sisters, who had remained in the Buffalo area, settling in Boston, near Hamburg, subsequently developed medical issues. At this point, Margie and I were traveling to San Diego and Boston to assist, to Bangkok to visit Margie’s parents and sister, and to Chicago and LA to visit Margie’s brothers. After my father passed on, both sisters followed, and my mother finally succumbed, as well. The focus of our attention then shifted to Margie’s side. Her father had passed away earlier, also because of medical problems, but her mother remained active for many years. Since she liked to travel, we took her on a cross-country trip to visit national parks, and to Europe. But her condition declined, and she returned to Bangkok to live with Margie’s sister and brother-in-law. Now 101 (2019), she has been bed-ridden for several years, and we have b...(read more) |
