Terry W. Lee
Class of 1969
Army, 3 Years
I joined the U.S. Army in 1971, with the all Hawaii Voluntee Army. I did my basic training at Fort Ord, California and applied for Officer Candidate School (OCS), either as a helicopter pilot or Arttillery officer. I did my advance training at the Quartermaster School at Fort Lee, Petersburg, Virginia. I graduated as a Aircraft Repair Parts Specialist but never worked in my field. My whole class was shipped out to Viet Nam, except for 7 students. My orders were held up pending my test results for OCS. I was assigned to the mess hall as a mess clerk working with a sargent that had previously been stationed in Hawaii. We had so much fun in the mess hall that the Company Commander decided to make me his company clerk ( Morning Report clerk, legal clerk and the mail clerk). Little did I know that the company next door had one person for each position. But I did get to play volleyball with the company commander and I made the All Post Volleyball Team. This was an Air Force team with two guys from Hawaii, as coaches, and four tall African Americans that I got to set. After 2 1/2 years I got an early out but was required to serve 1 year in the Hawaii National Guard at Fort Ruger with the 447th Field Artillery. I spent one more year with the Guard because it was so much fun. My regards go out to all my classmates that went to Viet Nam, that was really the hard job, and those that did not make it back.
