Favorite School Memory My relationship and interaction with Ms Jane C Lucchesi as a teacher and perhaps mentor. Ms Lucchesi was such an admonishing figure for me in those days and after some time of getting to know each other I affectionally changed her title to Ms Lucrazy. I can remember the many times she would awaken me from a deep day dream in the middle of class, only to find the entire class laughing while she would be looking for an answer from me to one of her questions that always seemed rather unimportant. It always seem to me that she was the one that had not been really paying attention or she wouldn’t be bothering me since I was obviously not paying attention to anything she was teaching and, at this point, even if I did know the answer, (I didn’t) I wasn’t going to tell her what it was. This somewhat mystical relationship went on from those early years of day dreaming in junior high, all the way thru my highschool years when she eventually gave up trying to teach me and took over the librarian duties of the school. I could only perceive her move as providence for the both of us that we should be able to continue our relationship in the library even after I was no longer her favorite student or target in class. I can remember the many times I would visit the library in those later days, quietly sitting with my friends. Meanwhile, Jane, with glasses at low profile on her nose, calmly striking the keys of her typewriter and without missing a key stroke, would issue, at full lung capacity those timeless words of encouragement that would echo throughout the library, “CLYDE SHUTUP!”. Any attempts by me to defend my innocence would fruitlessly be met with more cries of encouragement “CLYDE SHUTUP! She actually once yelled so hard at me that her teeth flew out of her mouth. I was very amazed that she was quick enough to catch those pearly whites in midair and safely relocate them back to where they had come from. Then there was the time she signed a hall pass for me and later claimed that I forged her signature(not true) and arranged for me a special meeting with a bunch of trachers including the principal. She finally remembered signing the pass and I was released from their custody on somewhat less than good behavior. Oh what times Jane and I shared together. Our final encounter came during the last week of school before my graduation. It was at this encounter that I received my final words of inspiration from Ms Lucchesi. Those unforgetable words of encouragement to me were, “Out of all the kids I ever had, you were the least likely to succeed”. How right she was. She surely was a real trooper to have put up with the likes of someone like me! May she Rest In Peace. Here’s another little story. I often tell this little story to new acquaintances. Back in the day I worked for Owens Corning Fiberglas in their Fabric Structures Division in Toledo, Ohio engineering roof systems like the Silverdome in Pontiac, MI and the Metrodome in Minneapolis,MN. About a year into that job I accepted a transfer from their main office in Toledo, Ohio (a very welcomed transfer) to their production facility in Hazleton, a small town in eastern Pennsylvania. My new office in Hazleton faced another office wherein a short, curly, red headed guy with a fiery disposition and a very low, booming voice named Bob resided. Bob was of Lebanese decent but grew up in the southern part of the USA and ended up with a very heavy southern drawl. Since Bob’s office faced my office he was able to hear me when I answered my phone calls. After about a month in my new office there came a day when Bob just couldn’t take it any more. Bob marched out of his office and came to my office door and with a very irritated voice inquired of me, “Why when you answer the phone do you always ask ‘To who am I speaking?’ “. I said him “I don’t do that Bob” to which to which he replied, “Yes you do! Every time you answer the phone you ask ‘To who am I speaking?’ “ I said, “No Bob, what I am saying is my name, ‘Tuohimaa Speaking’ “. Bob thought about it for a couple of seconds and with a quick “Uh” of acknowledgement did an about-face and marched back into his office. I have had to use this story fairly often when I meet new acquaintances that struggle with my Finnish name pronunciation. I am now known by many of...(read more)
