About Me | Go, Dog, Go Guy Curmudgeon wordsmith James M. Voigt was born a Virgo in 1936 and has spent all but three years since as a resident of Oregon, Washington and Southern California. Now residing in the Parkrose Heights neighborhood of Portland, Ore., Voigt is a 1959 journalism graduate of Los Angeles State College (now California State University) after also matriculating from Multnomah Junior College and Parkrose High School in Portland. His first professional experience after graduation was writing listing copy (“Lucy tells Desi…”) for Hollywood’s edition of TV Guide. Voigt also served as news editor of the Albany (Ore.) Democrat-Herald daily, as editor of weekly newspapers in Burbank and Pacific Palisades, Calif. and as occasional copy editor for the daily Los Angeles Examiner and Herald- Examiner. In 1966, Voigt became the first suburban journalist to win the Greater Los Angeles Press Club best-story award and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in spot-news reporting. During his professional career, he also won or shared more than 30 other state and national awards for general excellence, reporting, typography and photography. Between and after his news positions, Voigt served as assistant director of public information for the Port of Portland and as a public- information specialist for the Portland School District, from which he retired in 1991. Voigt also served as a board member of Solve Oregon Litter and Vandalism (SOLV), two terms as president of the Parkrose Soccer Club and as secretary of Soccer Referees of Oregon. He also completed eight years in the organized U.S. Naval Reserve. His children are Rebecca Elisia Voigt Hart, a cybertech and tax specialist and Thomas Jason Voigt, website designer and celebrity webmaster (www.zodiackiller.com).
