Randy Heflin

Pitcher for the Boston Red Sox from 1945-1946

What is Randy Heflin known for?

Randy Heflin, born Randolph Rutherford Heflin on September 11, 1918, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, was an American professional baseball player well known for his stint as a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox in 1945-1946. Heflin began his pro career in 1939 which extended until 1952 with a brief interruption during 1943–44 due to his service in the United States Navy during World War II.

Throughout his career, Heflin made impressive strides. Following his service in World War II, he won three of five decisions for the top-level Louisville Colonels before getting recalled by the Red Sox. During this time, he pitched in 20 games, starting 14 of them, and registered six complete games. Notably, he accomplished two complete-game shutouts, one against the Detroit Tigers and the other against the Philadelphia Athletics.

In his short yet memorable Major League Baseball career, Heflin held a win-loss record of 4-11. He achieved an earned run average of 3.86 and made 45 strikeouts across 116⅔ innings pitched. Despite only appearing in five games for the Red Sox in 1946, Heflin left an indelible mark, eventually going on to become a player-manager in the minor leagues.

After a distinguished career, Heflin passed away on August 17, 1999, in his native Fredericksburg. For more on Heflin's career and contributions to baseball, check out his profile on Baseball Reference.
