Jack Rose

Guitarist

What is Jack Rose known for?

Jack Rose, famously known as Dr. Ragtime, was a notable musician and guitarist born in Fredericksburg, Virginia on February 16, 1971. He moved on to pursue his career based in Philadelphia. Rose was renowned for his solo acoustic guitar work and his contribution as a member of the noise/drone band, Pelt.

In his career, which spanned from 1993 to 2009, Rose experimented with various genres including American primitive guitar, ragtime, blues, folk, country blues, drone, noise, raga, and experimental. He commenced his journey in the music industry in 1993, joining Pelt alongside Michael Gangloff and Patrick Best. Pelt released their first album in 1995 and continued to release over a dozen albums.

Over time, Pelt started leaning towards more folk-derived material, with Rose shifting his focus to acoustic guitar. As a part of Pelt, he shared the stage with noteworthy tourmates like Harry Pussy, Charalambides, and Sonic Youth. Apart from his association with Pelt, Rose was also a prolific solo artist, recording numerous albums, EPs, and compilation tracks on multiple record labels. His inclusion in Devendra Banhart's sold-out compilation in 2004, Golden Apples of the Sun, further enhanced his public exposure.

Rose's first three consecutive releases on Eclipse Records - Red Horse, White Mule(2002), Opium Musick (2003), and Raag Manifestos (2004) received wide critical acclaim. His work on the acoustic guitar particularly impressed Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance, and Raag Manifestos was named one of 2004's "50 Records of the Year" by the avant-garde music magazine, The Wire.

Jack Rose sadly passed away on December 5, 2009, leaving a rich musical legacy behind.
