| Favorite School Memory | This isn't a "favorite" memory in the usual sense. It's a characteristic vignette of high school in the 1950's: . Miss Peck taught Modern History, which was purportedly a college-style class. It was stupid beyond compare. She was a fierce, small-minded right-winger. We were forced to call China the “so-called Peoples Republic of China,†only she said “Chinerâ€. We had to stand up to contribute to class “discussion,†so one day (I guess we were studying colonialism) I got up and said that Christian missionaries had no right to convert Africans; that African religions were not inherently inferior to Christianity. My friend Paul Cohart got up too and said he agreed with me. She boiled over with rage and virtually screamed for us to sit down. Paul, being the wiser of the two of us, sat down.
