Drafted, then joined so I could pick a job that would keep me out of Vietnam. That didn't work and I spent a year there, May of 68-69. Served with the 3rd Squadron, 11th Armored Cav. No purple heart, but did receive a Bronze Star.

I joined the CO. Army National Guard my Junior year at Ranum. Since then I have been deployed to Utah for the 02 Winter Olympic Games, FT. Carson in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 03-04, LA for Hurricane Katrina in 05, Windsor, CO for the tornado in 08, and the DNC in Denver 08. When I origanally enlisted I was a cook in the 3650th Maintance Company in Longmont, and now serve as a Chemical and Quartermaster Repairer in B Company "Spartans"/147th Brigade Support Battillion (FMC) in Longmont, part of the 169th Fires Brigade 157th Field Artillery Batillion.

I was stationed at NAS Corpus Christi with Training Squadron 31. I was an Aviation Storekeeper 3rd Class when I was discharged. I was in charge of ordering all supplies for the entire squadron and all flight gear for the pilots and flight crew. I attended "A" school in Memphis and graduated 2nd in my class. I was also named "Sailor of the Month" for outstanding work performance.

Graduated from Univ. of Utah and was commissioned an Ensign in 1971. Was ultimately promoted to Commander and commanded a helicopter squadron aboard USS Nimitz. During my career I accumulated over 3300 flight hours in about 15 different fixed and rotary wing aircraft. I was the first fleet Night Vision Goggle instructor and my squadron had the first fleet fully combat search & rescue aircarft I also did some flying for the movie "Hunt for Red October". I retired in 1992 to commence a career in commercial real estate.

Moved over to England for three years and saw more of the world that I can say. Moved to Texas in 1986 and was here until 1995 made a trip to Korea and back to Texas until I retired in May 2006.

Our Iver C. Ranum High School military alumni are some of the most outstanding people we know and this page recognizes them and everything they have done!
