Bruce graduated from Oberlin College in 1969. He received a Master of Divinity degree from Crozer Theological Seminary and was an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. Bruce worked as an educator for most of his career, including for 23 years at Meriter Health Services in Madison, WI. He was active in the Sun Prairie United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge.
