James Agnew
Class of 1969
Army, 20+ Years
Chaplain (Colonel) James E. (Jim) Agnew, a native of New Jersey, entered the Army Chaplaincy in 1985 with an ecclesiastical endorsement from the Chaplaincy Full Gospel Churches. His education includes: Bachelor of Arts in Education from Rider University in 1973 and a Master of Divinity from Oral Roberts University in 1980. He was commissioned a reserve officer through ROTC in June of 1973. He served in active and reserve assignments as an Adjutant General officer for 12 years prior to branch transferring to the Army Chaplaincy in 1985.
His chaplain assignments include: Battalion Chaplain, 1/77th Armor 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado; DIVARTY Chaplain, Division Artillery, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Stanley, Korea; Brigade Chaplain, 2nd (St Lo) Brigade, 2nd Armored Division, Fort Hood, Texas; DISCOM Chaplain, Division Support Command, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas where he deployed with the Division to Desert Shield/Desert Storm; Deputy Division Chaplain, 2nd Armored Division, Fort Hood, Texas; Assistant Corps Chaplain, V Corps, Heidelberg, Germany; USAREUR (Forward) Chaplain, Taszar, Hungary where he served as the Theater Chaplain for the initial stages of Joint Endeavor; Deputy Staff Chaplain, 100th ASG, Grafenwoehr, Germany; Deputy Staff Chaplain, First U.S. Army, Fort Gillem, Georgia, Deputy Staff Chaplain, Military Intelligence Center and Fort Huachuca, Arizona; Command Chaplain, First U.S. Army, Fort Gillem, Georgia, where he also served as the Joint Task Force Katrina Chaplain; and Command Chaplain, 5th Signal Command, Mannheim, Germany. He retired from his last assignment as Deputy Command Chaplain, Forces Command, Fort McPherson, Georgia on 30 April 2011, with 38 years of service.
Chaplain Agnew is a graduate of the Adjutant General Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Chaplain Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Chaplain Training Manager Course, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the resident Army Command and General Staff College, and the Division and Installation Chaplain Courses.
His awards include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster,, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal with 2 stars, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 3 Stars, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Metal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon with 3 Device, NATO Medal, Saudi Arabia-Kuwait Liberation Medal, Kuwait-Kuwait Liberation Medal, Joint and Army Meritorious Unit Commendations and Army Superior Unit Award.
He is married to the former Karen Mercer Garner, and has two adult children, Dawn Mundell and James, and two grandchildren, Fiona Gail and James William.
