Graduation Year Class of 1968
Date of Passing Jan 31, 2023
About Patrick Thomas Garside passed away January 31, 2023, in Lake Oswego, Oregon embraced by his family after a courageous multi-year fight with cancer. Patrick was born February 16, 1950, in Portland, Oregon to parents Thomas Edward and Ethel Grace Garside. In his youth Patrick was an avid drummer, playing with his band Little Scotchy & The Mixers. He graduated from Hudson Bay High School in Vancouver, Washington, with the proud class of 1968. He joined the United States Merchant Marines and relished the opportunity to travel the world that would spark his lifelong love for the outdoors and adventure. Along his journeys, Patrick met Leda Isabel Marin Obando on a sunny beach in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, in 1976 and soon after they married in Bellevue, Washington, in 1977. After their marriage, Patrick and Leda moved to Anchorage, Alaska, followed by moves to Portland, Oregon; Honolulu, Hawaii; and eventually they settled down in Lake Oswego, Oregon in 1991 where they raised their family.
Patrick’s career transitioned from working as a crew member on ships and tugboats to superintendent overlooking maritime transportation for the Crowley Maritime Corporation, and the Jones Stevedoring Company. In 1995 Patrick opened, owned, and operated a successful AAMCO Transmission franchise until 2012, and then returned to the waterfront, working for Kinder Morgan until his retirement in 2019.
Patrick found joy in taking family vacations, listening to jazz, bicycling, running, reading, walking the course for a round of golf, picking wild Oregon summer blackberries, the Pacific Northwest (in particular the Oregon Coast, his happy place), and a hot homecooked meal by his wife. Survivors include his wife Leda; sons Matthew T. Garside (Pamela) of Sacramento, California, Adam M. Garside of Portland, Oregon; brother Timothy Garside; sister, Lissa Gruman; grandchildren Ella, Peyton, and William; his aunts Ruth Hyde, Sue Polzoni; cousins Janet Rice, Lynn Hyde, Lynne Polzoni, Laurie Hardy; nephew Taylor Gruman; and niece Paige Gruman.
Patrick was a loving husband, endearing father, proud grandparent, and a dear friend to many. He will be sorely missed, but his spirit will never be forgotten.
