"Roger always had a huge heart for those less fortunate"

Roger was born in Vancouver, WA, son of William A. and Rachel R. Cole. He attended Harney Elementary, McLoughlin Junior High School and graduated with honors from Hudson's Bay, class of 1968. He lettered in swimming on the high school swim team.

Roger graduated from the University of Washington with a B.A. in Geography.
Professionally, he worked as a locator for Land Title in Vancouver, as a cartographer for NOAA in Silver Spring, MD and later in the same position for Tillamook County, Clark County and the State of Washington in Olympia. Most recently he worked for Regal Cinemas in Vancouver.

Roger was involved in Vancouver Boy Scout Troop 731 and achieved the rank of Eagle. He served as Scoutmaster for Vancouver Troop 340 and later served as a District Commissioner. Roger attended Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and several national Scout Jamborees. He was awarded the Silver Beaver, one of Scouting's highest achievements, for his years of Scout volunteer work.

He had been a member of the Fort Vancouver Kiwanis Club, serving on their board and the Vancouver Optimist Club, serving as president.
Roger had a passion for volunteer work, especially with environmental concerns. He served on the Gifford Pinchot Task Force, Friends of the Columbia Gorge, the Sierra Club/Loo Wit Group's forestry and energy committees, Columbia River Keeper, the Stop LNG Committee and most recently, was a key leader in the Sierra Club's "Beyond Coal" Campaign. He was active with Clark County Democrats for numerous campaigns. He was a volunteer for the Sea Scouts, Common Cause, the Seaman's Center, Clark County Walk-and-Knock and the City of Vancouver.

An active outdoorsman, Roger was a life-long sailor, had owned several sailboats and was a past member of the U of W and Portland Yacht Clubs. He enjoyed caving and served as vice chair for the Oregon Grotto of the National Speleological Society. He was an avid cross country skier, camper and hiker, was a past member of the Ptarmigans, summited Mt. Hood and camped in all the National Parks in the West. He twice traveled to Europe.
Roger was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Vancouver and served there in numerous ways.

Survivors include his brother, Douglas (wife Margie) of Bellingham, WA; cousin, Steve Walton of Beaverton, OR; and his best friend, hiking, camping, bicycling and kayaking buddy, Lehman Holder (wife Barb) of Vancouver.
