| About | Joyce Ann Bishop was born November 22, 1944, to Florence and Edward Humbert in Baltimore, Maryland. The family later moved to Ellicott City, Maryland, and Joyce graduated from Howard High in 1962. She graduated from Towson State College (now University) in 1966 and embarked upon a teaching career. Joyce loved helping her first graders learn to read and smiled with delight as she saw the proverbial lightbulb turn on in their minds. She brought comfort and care to students, many of whom were separated from their mothers for the first time, as those were days before kindergarten was widely available. In early 1969, she met the love of her life, John Wayne Bishop. They were soon engaged and married on November 8 of that same year. The couple moved to Howard County, Maryland, in 1971, and resided in Hammond Village for about 47 years. After two devastating miscarriages, Joyce and Wayne gave birth to Randy and Keri, about three years apart. Joyce dedicated her life to caring for them and preparing them for adulthood, for which they are so grateful. Joyce continued substitute teaching for many years in Howard County public schools, particularly Hammond Middle School. She also served as PTA president there. An avid reader, she always advocated for public education and early literacy. Joyce and Wayne were members of First Baptist Church of Laurel for over four decades. They taught Sunday school together for many years. Joyce also founded and administered a neighborhood tutoring program through the church. They raised their own two children in the Lord and helped many others in their faith journeys as well. She is fondly remembered for singing "Jesus Loves Me" to her children before bed. Joyce and Wayne moved to Wake Forest, North Carolina, in 2019, and joined Richland Creek Community Church. Joyce was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, teacher, church member, and neighbor. She remained concerned for childrens welfare, in action and support through Christian causes, throughout her lifetime. Joyce had leading-edge hip replacement surgery in 1985, due to a congenital hip defect. She maintained good mobility for decades afterward. She underwent traumatic surgeries in 2017 and never fully recovered her walking ability. In her final years, she struggled with an auto-immune disease. She went to be with the Lord on November 21, 2024, at Duke Regional Hospital. She is survived by her husband, John Wayne; her son Randy, his wife, Kay, her grandsons Nathan and Elijah; her daughter Keri, her husband, Chris Bosch, her granddaughters Lydia, Abigail, Bethany, and Phoebe. She is also survived by her brother, the Rev. Kenneth Humbert and his wife, Beverly, along with their children Micah and Meghan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Florence Humbert. Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."Matthew 19:14 |
