About | Charlotte was born at Saint Agnes' Hospital on November 13, 1941, and spent her early years in Ellicott City, MD where she enjoyed a carefree small-town life playing with her older sister and brother, attending Sunday School at Emory United Methodist Church, serving on the Safety Patrol, and becoming a talented tap dancer (she was even on TV on the Stardust Review Show!). The Allen Family moved to the suburbs in her early teens, where she perfected her tap and ballroom dance skills enough to be accepted to the USO Show, became a Marksman in the Junior National Rifle Association Club, joined the high school Table Tennis Club, was a talented majorette, became the fastest typist, mastered short hand, welcomed her new baby sister during her senior year, and graduated from Howard County Senior High School in 1959. After high school, Charlotte moved out of the family home supporting herself by working at several secretarial and accounting jobs, including at W. R. Grace & Company where she met her "best friend" Bruce in 1960. They married 6 years later, on January 29, 1966, at her beloved Emory United Methodist Church (in a blizzard!). They moved around for a few years in several states (IL, MN, IL again, DE, NJ), following Bruce's career opportunities while Charlotte was primarily a homemaker, hostess, certified Red Cross Lifeguard, and volunteer at church, having daughters Pam in 1968 in Minnesota and Sam in 1970 in Delaware. Charlotte and Bruce returned to Maryland in 1974 to raise their family (and many pets) in Calverton in Beltsville and Woodstream in Seabrook, where Charlotte was a highly valued volunteer at the Elementary School and authored her neighborhood newsletter. They later moved to live on the Chesapeake Bay in Chesapeake Harbour in Annapolis to enjoy their retirement years while dabbling in boating & kayaking, as well as serving on the landscaping committee; then a short stint in Vienna, Virginia, close to Pam, where Charlotte bravely and lovingly cared for Bruce who was suffering from Pulmonary Fibrosis; and then finally to "the island" in Chester, MD on Kent Island where Charlotte bought a little condo on the Chester River, close to Sam, after Bruce's death. Charlotte was immensely proud of and close to her daughters, but a highlight of her life was when she became "Mammy" in 1988, with the birth of her first grandson. She spent the rest of her 82 and a half years adoring her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, being their best cheerleader for any and all accomplishments or activities they enjoyed. She only missed a grandchild event if recovering from one of her many health issues. In the end, she lost her years-long battle with chronic congestive heart failure. Charlotte wrote in her yearbook "The world looks better from behind a smile," which perfectly sums up her personality... always smiling, putting on a brave face, enjoying a sweet and simple life. Charlotte Ann Allen MacEwen, beloved mother of Pamela Ann MacEwen Dodd and Samantha Ann MacEwen Kutz, was called home on July 5, 2024, with the entire family by her side, at the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton hospital. She joins her beloved husband of 51 years, Bruce Lloyd MacEwen; her mother, Ann Laura Hensley Sloan Allen; her father, Alfred Lafayette Allen; her older sister, Frankie Marie Allen Pardoe; her brother, Ronald Alfred Allen; her brothers-in-law, Stephen Wesley Ehrhardt and Edwin Gregory MacEwen; her sister-in-law, Janet Beverly MacEwen MacBride; and her in-laws, Lucille Virginia Lochte MacEwen and Lloyd Bruce MacEwen, in eternal peace and rest. She will be profoundly missed by many, including Pam and Sam's husbands, Richard Roy Dodd and Edward William Kutz; her younger sister, Deborah Lynn Allen Ehrhardt; her brothers-in-law, Carroll Thompson Pardoe, John MacBride, and Commander USN Retired George Bailey MacEwen; her sisters-in-law, Susan Goodwin Allen, Lucille Elaine MacEwen Clore, and Grace MacEwen Hoffman; her late father-in-law's wife, Irmela Marta AnneMarie Gille MacEwen and her many nieces & nephews. Her four adored grandchildren, Dustin Terrill Kutz (fiancée Jessica Nixon), Savannah Nicholle Kutz (Paul Daley), Ryan Richard Dodd, and Rayden Richard Dodd will continue to cherish the many laughs and memories made; while her four great-grandchildren with whom she was blessed, Shawn Isaiah Nixon, Charlotte Rose Kutz, Leonel Theodore Bear Daley, and Shyra Payton Kutz will remember that every day with Mammy was truly a happy day. |
Events | A memorial service was held Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Emory United Methodist Church, 3799 Church Road, Ellicott City, Maryland at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Charlotte's name to one of her favorite charities: the Wounded Warrior Project, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the National Wildlife Federation, or Emory Methodist Church. |
