About Clyde Elwood Souder, 75, peacefully died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, at a Bangor hospital. Born Nov. 14, 1935, in Laurel, Md., he was the son of Eugene and Elsie (Scaggs) Souder. Clyde graduated from Howard High School in 1953. Enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1954, he served for four years on the aircraft carrier USS Bennington in San Diego. While stationed in California he met Judith (Wall) Souder and they were married Aug. 7, 1957, aboard the USS Bennington. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1958, Clyde and his family returned to Maryland where he attended the University of Maryland. In 1963 he graduated from the School of Physical Therapy and with much enthusiasm accepted his first position at Bangor General Hospital, now Eastern Maine Medical Center. He was instrumental in establishing the new physical therapy department at that time and remained there for 45 years until he retired in 2008. Clyde tirelessly worked at EMMC as well as area nursing homes ensuring people were back on their feet as quickly as possible. Throughout his career Clyde shared his "magic touch" of healing, always accompanied with his great wit and sense of humor, with his patients. Embracing Maine as his home, he thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of rural life. He journeyed far and wide exploring antique shops and flea markets always searching for his next treasure and inspiration for his handmade crafts. In the early 1970s Clyde and his sons harvested, prepared and built the log home that he and Judy have resided in for the past 30 years. Clyde loved building, visiting the ocean, collecting cowboy memorabilia and anything western. He is survived by his wife, Judith A. Souder of Winterport; two sons, Lon E. Souder and his wife, Janine, and Trent E. Souder and his wife, Lauren, both of Winterport; daughter, Tonya Souder of Winslow; grandchildren, Lon R. Souder and wife, Kelly, of Winterport, Heidi (Souder) Hewes and husband, Ben, of Ledyard, Conn., Edgar, Todd and LeeAnn Souder; and great-grandsons, Ryan Hewes and Jacob Souder. He also leaves his three brothers, Donald Souder and his wife, Alan Mae, and Weldon Souder and his partner, Ingrid, both of Maryland, and Raymond Souder and his wife, Susan, of South Carolina; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family extends a sincere thank you to Northeast Cardiology and EMMC Family Practice as well as the nursing staff for their caring attention. The friendships of his fellow physical therapists at EMMC - Clyde's home away from home - brought much joy into his life and you will always remain in our hearts.
