About It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John R. Earp Jr, 89, of Mt. Airy, MD on Monday September 30, 2024. John was born on October 1,1935 in Savage, MD., to John Raymond Sr and Helen (Nee Ramsburg) Earp. John was a lifelong resident of Howard County.
John graduated from Howard High School in 1954 and attended the School of Agriculture at the University of Maryland for 3 years.
His real passion was in fire service. He began as a member of the Laurel Rescue Squad in 1959 and later served as an active firefighter with the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department. John was a dispatcher for Howard County Central Alarm for 13 years and a Barracks Clerk for the Maryland State Police for three years before becoming a fire investigator with the Office of the State
Fire Marshal in 1973.
John retired from his career as a Deputy Chief Fire Marshal in 1995 after 23 years of service.
After retiring John spent his weekends selling knives at local gun shows, an activity he enjoyed for many years.
John enjoyed fishing, reading, listening to bluegrass music, geocaching, quick family get togethers, and weekly dinners at his daughter Kristi's home.
John was a kind, gentle man with a great sense of humor. He had a knack for giving good simple advice often with quick witted idioms. John cared for his family above all else.
John is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Evaline and Clayton Miller; his 4 children, John R. Earp lll and wife Beverley Alexander, Travis Earp, Kimberly and husband Carlyle Stull, Kristi and husband David Ahlquist; 9 grandchildren Erin Earp, Kyle (Newton) Stull, Megan Rodgers, Samantha Stull, Jake (Travis) Earp, Hannah Earp, Reagan Ahlquist, Riley Ahlquist, and Avery Ahlquist; 5 great grandchildren, Adelle, Kennedy, Carson, Weston, and Landon; nephew and niece Warren Miller and Wendy Khawly and their families.
Events A memorial service was held Sunday, October 27 at 2 pm at Donaldson Funeral Home of Clarksville, P.A.
Donations can be made to the American Red Cross, an organization that John admired for all the help they provided to many families in need during his career.
