About | Walter was born in Baltimore, MD. He grew up in Ellicott City, MD, where he remained his entire life. After graduating from Howard High School, Walter joined the United States Navy, which led him to fight in the Vietnam War while on-board the USS Annapolis from 1967-1970. He also boarded the USS Camden from 1970-1971. One of his greatest achievements was when he earned the status of a "golden shellback" while on the USS Annapolis. He made lifelong friendships that still last to this day, and was very proud to serve his great nation. At age 15, Walter, better known at that time as Gordie, worked in a local country store where he was taken under the wing by Marty Brosenne. It was there that he learned his lifetime trade of meat cutting. After his discharge from the Navy, he continued his trade at Pantry Pride and Memco. He then found his calling at Costco Wholesale in Glen Burnie, MD, where he has given over 22 years of his service as their Meat Manager. On June 26, 1971, Walter married his best friend and soulmate, Paula Kathleen (Kathy) and they had 2 boys together, Walter Gordon (Rusty) and William Gavin (Gavin). They raised their family in Ellicott City and still reside in the same family home. Walter became a "Pappy" in 2005 when his first grandson Austin William ("Willie") was born, and then became a Pappy again, 3 more times when Dylan Gordon ("D"), Camden Hudson ("Cam"), and Morgan Angelina ("Susie Q") arrived. Walter loved his grandchildren very much, and they each had a very special place in his heart. Walter enjoyed horseback trail riding with his brother and sister-in-law Jay and Sue, watching western movies, and following NASCAR. He was also a fan of the Baltimore Ravens and Baltimore Orioles. He played an active role in coaching Rusty's baseball team when he was younger, and then coaching his grandson Dylan in baseball in more recent years. In addition, he thoroughly enjoyed watching his son Gavin perform in many theatrical and choir performances over the years. With his family by his side, Walter was called home to be with the Lord on January 6, 2017 at 12:48am, after a valiant fight with cancer. He will sorely missed by all.~ |
