Warrant Officer Gary W. Hanna, 19, a helicopter Pilot in the 9th Cavalry Division, was killed during combat action January 31 in Vietnam, the Defense Department said early this week. He was stationed near An Khe, Vietnam, when he was first reported missing in action last week. W-O Hanna enlisted in the Army during October, 1966, he took his basic training at Fort Polk, La. After completing training at the Army's helicopter school at Fort Wolters, Texas, on June 23, 1967, he entered aviation school at Fort Rucker, Ala., where he received the silver wings of an Army aviator on October 24, 1967. It was after he graduated from aviation school that he left for Vietnam.
Killed in action when the helicopter that he was piloting was shot down north of Hue City during the TET offensive in 1968.
He was a graduate of Howard County Sr. High School Class of '66. He was also a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Ellicott City where he sang in the choir for 6 years.
