Ms. Laura Anne Brand, age 60, a resident of DeQueen, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2011 at her home.

She was born to Arthur and Anne Salyers Cohrs in Harvey, Illinois on Mach 12, 1950 and grew up in Chicago Heights, Illinois on the family farm. A teacher of chemistry and art at Cossatot Community College, she received her Bachelor’s in Chemistry from Prairie State University and her Master’s in Chemistry and Business Administration at Governor’s State University.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one older brother, Arthur Cohrs, Jr.

She is survived by two children, Aaron Isaac Brand of Texarkana, Arkansas, and Anna Livia Brand, of New Orleans, Louisiana; future son-in-law Paul Maddock, of New Orleans, Louisiana; and two brothers and their families, Donald Cohrs of Cordova, Illinois, his wife Jo Cohrs, and their children Jason, Chris, Jennifer, Troy, and Elizabeth, and Richard Cohrs of Springfield, Virginia, his wife, Bonnie Cohrs, and their children, Brian and Geoffrey. She is also survived by countless friends and colleagues, including her oldest and dearest friends Therese Talmont, of Springfield, Illinois and Melinda Butler of Phoenix, Arizona, and many dear friends in DeQueen and Texarkana.

Laura had a curious mind and an unquenchable appetite for learning. Although sculpting in wood, stone, and clay was her first love in art, she also taught herself to paint, draw and do pottery and, when she passed, was teaching herself wood burning. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed cooking. Her love for creating art was only matched by her love for her farm and her many animals, including a current animal family of five dogs, four donkeys, one pony, two sheep, two goats, and an endless parade of cats. Her farm, Aravir Farm, was a bounty of flowers, trees and a garden that she planted and cultivated over the years. Her children recall her as dynamic, deeply inspiring, loving, stubborn, giving, and the most amazing mom they could have hoped for.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Cossatot Community College, in the AGRI LAB Building on Saturday, January 29, from 1 PM to 5 PM. A formal service with readings and speakers will be held at 2 PM during this time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to an educational fund that is being set up in her name at Cossatot. Please contact the family or Cossatot for more information.
