I remember when George first came to Leavitt Avenue Sxhool, and we became good friends even though he only spoke German and was fresh from East Germany I believe. I visited him at his house and met his brother Norbert and his sister Rita. We explored a lot of places, one of which had an old World War 2 fighter plane in the yard. We climbed in and played with the controls, but when the engine suddenly fell off with a big crash, we ran away as fast as we could go. So sorry he was killed by a drunk driver! I lost a good friend! George Lorentz was a wonderful, kind, ambitious brother! Sadly, he was killed by a drunk driver and died on December 24th, 1965. He was accepted to the prestigious Navy Academy in Annapolis. He was the only candidate from Illinois. I remember Derwinski and the Senator from Illinois calling our house, congratulating George. We joked that the President would call him next. He was such a great guy with so much potential. We will never forget you George! Love, Rita Lorentz Johnson, class of 1969
