Went on to earn PhD; undergraduate degrees from UCLA, doctorate at Yale, in English. Professor at U. of North Carolina. Was an editor of new editions of novels by George Elliot. His mother was Frances Marion, the screenplay writer for Mary Pickford; also a novelist. Father was cowboy actor Fred Thomson. Fred was in early 70s when he died circa 1998-2000.
