Richard(Richie) Evans

Class of 1959

Evans captured nine NASCAR modified titles in a 13-year span, including eight in a row from 1978-85. In the first year of the current NASCAR Modified Tour format in 1985, Evans won 12 races, including all four events at Thompson, Conn.

His career accomplishments also included multiple track championships across the Northeast and hundreds of victories including a 37-win season during a stretch of 60 modified races in 1979 to earn him the nickname "The Rapid Roman."

Evans was later ranked first in the 2003 voting of the "NASCAR All-Time Modified Top 10 Drivers," and he was also named one of NASCAR�s "50 Greatest Drivers" in 1998.

Evans was fatally injured in a crash at Martinsville Speedway during a practice session on Oct. 24, 1985.
