VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. — Tampa, Florida native and Hillsborough High School graduate class of 1997, David Ponder IV was promoted to the rank of Marine Corps gunnery sergeant during a ceremony with fellow Marines aboard Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia, today.
Gunnery Sergeant Ponder, who entered active military service in August 1997 is currently serving as the intelligence chief, Coordination, Liaison and Assessment Team, Marine Corps Forces, North located within Marine Corps Training and Advisory Group (MCTAG) in Virginia Beach, Va. MCTAG provides conventional training and advisor teams to work alongside partner Nations' security forces.
Before checking into MCTAG, Ponder served as an intelligence instructor at the Navy and Marine Corp Intelligence Training Center, Naval Air Station Oceana’s Dam Neck Annex from June 2009 until October 2010. Prior to that, he served as an intelligence chief with 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Air Support Element aboard amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu from August 2007 until June 2009. Ponder is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Allied Force in the Republic of Kosovo.
Gunnery Sergeant Ponder is married to Shonita Ponder of Charlotte, N. C. and they have two children Donte and David Ponder V.
His mother Sandra Brown still resides in Tampa, Fl. His father David Ponder III was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was an influence in the younger Ponder joining military service.

Our Hillsborough High School military alumni are some of the most outstanding people we know and this page recognizes them and everything they have done! Not everyone gets to come home for the holidays and we want our Hillsborough High School Military to know that they are loved and appreciated.
