Charles was born in Montgomery, Alabama and moved to Tampa, Florida as a youth. He attended Hillsborough High School where he was Advertising Manager for the Red and Black. He graduated in January 1952 then attended University of Florida. After graduating from the School of Pharmacy from the University of Florida in 1952 he served as in the U.S. Army as First Lieutenant in Korea. He married his sweetheart, Joyce, in January 1953. He spent his life in Florida and he & Joyce raised 3 children---Steven, Robert, and Chuck. All his kids graduated from Hillsborough High School.
