Michael Swanson
Class of 1974
Air Force, 20+ Years
I began my Air Force career as a personnel specialist (aka human resources), and in-processed more airmen than you can count at Lackland AFB for several years. Then I retrained as an operator/technician on ground radar equipment. Trained B-52, B-1and FB-111 aircrews on electronic countermeasures and bomb scoring in Colorado and the Philippines. As a radar operator, I could follow any low-level aircraft through ground clutter with the best of them! Also was a student training advisor in Colorado for four years, which was my favorite job! Was the operations superintendent for the RBS/ECM site in Arizona. I finished my career in Wyoming as a first sergeant for the 90th OSS (Missile Squadron) and finally the 90th Transportation Squadron. I did volunteer for Desert Storm duty in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but didn't end up deploying because the individual I was to replace extended his tour of duty.
I appreciated the opportunity to serve my country in the USAF. What a great life it was and I still miss serving to this day. It is hard to believe that fifteen years have passed since I last donned the uniform! I'll always cherish the memories and remember meeting many incredible folks. If I had to do it all over, I'd sign up again!
